Fairway Tips:

Thatch is the accumulation of dead or decaying leaf and root matter found just below the surface of the grass. Excessive amounts of thatch in fairways may affect the characteristics of the playing surface.

Excessive thatch build-up can be the result of poorly aerated soil, over-watering, excessive fertilizer or an accumulation of grass clippings. Thatch can also occur naturally, especially in warm season grasses. It is essential that the cause of the thatch is addressed while incorporating a program of thatch removal.

Scarifying is the mechanical removal of thatch from the turf, which verticutting is the control of thatch build-up by vertical mowing.
