Carolinas Golf Course Superintendents Association, Rounds 4 Research

The Carolinas golf industry took a major leap forward last year with the success of the first annual Rounds4Research.com auction raising more than $55,000 for turfgrass research. This year’s auction promises to be bigger and certainly broader with Georgia, Texas and Virginia joining the program.

David Rhodes has worked in both golf course management and groundsmanship and is an examiner for the Royal Horticultural Society and the Institute of Groundsmanship. He has lectured in the maintenance of natural and synthetic turf maintenance and writes for the trade press in UK, USA and New Zealand.

Introduction

The origins of artificial turf lie in the United States of America. The first installation in the UK was in 1971 at Islington, London.

There are several definitions of maintenance in various dictionaries, but they are all in a general context. To be more specific, the Sports Council/Hockey Association definition from their publication Artificial Turf Pitches for Hockey reads:

Author Geoff Brereton has considerable experience in the sports turf industry, both in Crown greens and Flat rink Bowls. He is an advisor on Bowling Green maintenance for clubs and local authorities and was Groundsman of the year in 1989. He has lectured at Reaseheath College, Myerscough College and is now employed by Elmwood College in Fife. He has been involved with education for the Institute of Groundsmanship for over 20 years. He is the author of training courses for Bowling Green staff and has contributed to the development of qualifications for ground staff in England and Scotland.
